Hot sun rays have a harsh effect against hair as much as they have against skin. This is the time to show more love to your hair. Precautions should be taken to protect the hair or else the damage will last longer. Excess heat from the sun takes away the moisture from the hair strands and also damages the protein in the hair. Hair becomes brittle, coarse and can be easily broken.
These harmful effects of the UV rays and excess heat on the hair can be avoided by taking good care. A few essential tips to protect hair in summer months have been listed below:
Always wear a scarf whenever you are outdoors. Don’t allow even a little hair or scalp get exposed to the harmful rays of sun. Tie up your hair into a loose bun when you are out doors and wrap a scarf around your head. By this you can protect hair and scalp from UV rays and you can retain moisture in the hair strands.
Use intense damage repair conditioners or a deep conditioning hair masks during this season, like the one from Dove. This helps to restore the damaged hair and keeps the hair hydrated.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in foods such as salmon, spinach, and omega-3 rich eggs can keep your hair strong and looking healthy and shiny. These foods are more essential in summers because your hair is more prone to damage now. Apart from these, have adequate quantities of water, fresh juices and fresh salads to keep the hair moisturized.
4. Avoid using hair sprays:
The alcohol content and other chemicals present in the hair sprays make the hair more dry and brittle. Its the time to avoid using such hair products. Instead you can make a natural moisturizing hair spray on your own.
How to prepare:
Fill 2/3 rd of a small spray bottle with water and 1/3rd with aloe vera juice. Shake well. Use this to spray on the hair frequently throughout the day. This beneficial characteristics of aloe vera protects your hair from sun damage and locks the moisture from escaping.
Boil a cup of water and put 2 tea bags into it. You can use green tea, back tea or chamomile tea bags for this purpose. Let the tea bags steep in the water for 5-10 minutes. Allow the water to cool down to room temperature. Flip your hair upside down and carefully pour the tea onto the hair and scalp. Take care to wet all the hair and scalp. Use a shower cap to cover the hair. Leave for at least 10 minutes and rinse off.
It is effective to use this tea conditioning on clean dry hair. Be careful not to stain your clothes with tea.
6. Trim the hair ends:
It is suggested to start the summer with trimmed hair ends. Compared to winter, hair grows faster during summer. To support this growing phase, it is better to cut off the split ends and refresh your hair.
7. Avoid using hot tools:
Excess heat is already damaging your hair. Using hot iron or blow dryer further worsens the hair condition. It is good to avoid these hot tools completely during summers. If you have to use a blow dryer, keep it low and never use on extremely wet hair. Let it dry at least 70% before using the blow dryer.
Soak the hair in fresh water or use a leave in conditioner before you take a dip in salt water. It prevents the hair from absorbing excess salts from the sea or pool.
