The basic aim of oily skin care is to remove excess sebum from the skin. But one mistake mostly done is people tend to over wash the face a number of times and remove all the oils completely. Oily skin care procedures should not lead to complete removal of oil. If you make the skin dry by completely removing oil using harsh soaps or face washes, the skin tries to correct it naturally and starts producing more and more oil, which results in increased sebum.
Oily Skin Care Routine:
Start with a cleanser. However, not all cleansers will work. Choose a cleanser, which contains salicylic acid i.e. a beta-hydroxy acid. It reduces the excessive sebum production. Cleansing should be done twice a day. You can use more times during humid times.
Most of the oily skin care products are oil-free. But it is always good to check the ingredients before you buy it. Do not buy products which is marked as ‘suitable for all skin types’. Instead, choose those which are meant exclusively for oily skin types.
If your skin is extremely oily, your toner can contain a little alcohol. Toning is the second step in your oily skin care routine i.e. just after cleansing. Make sure not to use toner excessively. Over use of alcohol based toners may dehydrate the skin and results in more oil production. Wet a cotton ball with toner and wipe onto face and let it air dry before putting on a moisturizer. Toner with witch hazel are good for oily skin types.
The degree of oiliness of your skin will determine whether you need moisturizer or not. If you do decide to include a moisturizer, be sure to use one that is oil-free, wax-free, lipid-free and non-comedogenic moisturizer.
4. Face Mask:
Use tomato, lemon, yogurt and clay face masks at least twice a week.
